After

summer break, some Beauty Academy students began Mrs. Adams’ Salon Development course.  This course is designed to teach students the ins and outs of starting their own salon.

Step No. 1 – Write the business plan.

Students had to find their ideal location, estamate the cost of utilities for that location and utilize resources like the local utilities company.

Step No. 2 – Create a floor plan for salon.

Students had to design their ideal salon and replicate it in a 3-D model.

Step No. 3 – Market research.

Students had to research all competitors in a 10 mile radius of their location. They had to research their potential profits and losses based on cash flow projections and determine their tax obligations.

Step No. 4 – The Shark Tank

Each student had to present their marketing plan, Marketing research and floor plan to a panel of professionals in the industry.

This exercise was considered their final and gave the students the experience of what it would be like to present their business to investors. The panel grilled the students with questions and then reported whether or not they felt their business was worthy of investment … Hence, the Shark Tank!

Students who persuaded the most investors, received the most votes for best salon model and acquired the highest score on the written portion of their business plan were given an award from their instructor. Future salon owner, Leigha Jackson said the experience was strenuous and eye opening.
