Focus on Women Seminar
Oct 26th

Thank You Mrs. Walton, Suited for Success
The American Business Women’s Association held a “Focus on Women” seminar on September 19, 2011 at the Quail Creek Golf and Country Club in Northwest Oklahoma City. Information and Technology Center students from Ms. Kincade’s and Ms. Samuels class attended thanks to scholarships provided by Ms. Susan Walton, founder of Suited for Success. Suited for Success is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help women achieve self sufficiency.
The ABWA’s mission is to bring together business women of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition.
The seminar started with a welcome and a brief history of their organization, invocation and flag salute. The first presentation was “What Can I Do and How Can I make
a Difference”, by ABWA member Donna Rynda, She also spoke about how she got into the organization and networked.
The featured speaker (my favorite) was Linda Vater, KFOR’s “Garden Guru”. Ms. Vater talked about her life and how she began to see the world in a new way and find what brought her joy in her life. For her, it was gardening. She started out small, gardening and landscaping her own backyard. Her passion turned into a new career on KFOR. She now has several speaking engagements and her home gardens were featured in Traditional Home Magazine.
Program.

The final speaker was Romance Writer, Sharon Sala. Ms. Sala is a long time member of Romance Writers Association and the Oklahoma Romance Writers Association. She has more than 85 books in print. Her books are New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and Walden Books mass market best-sellers. Ms. Sala says that writing changed her life, her world and her fate.
Listening to all the ladies that presented that day inspired me to keep writing stories and fulfilling my personal goals as a writer and starting a publishing company. The ABWA’s event showcased several women-owned businesses and entertainment by singer,“Darlin Darla” Morgan.
